Honoring a Life Through Impact
A courageous choice. A lasting impact.
Transform loss into life-saving research — and lasting legacy. Participation offers families a way to honor their loved one's life by contributing to groundbreaking research that strengthens suicide prevention and helps save lives.
How You Can Help Save Lives
Every contribution directly enables research that was never before possible, helping prevent future losses.
A Legacy That Saves Lives
Families transform personal loss into knowledge that strengthens prevention efforts. Your loved one's story becomes part of something larger.
Why Digital Devices Matter
Our inner lives now live on our devices — how we connect, search, communicate, cope. Studying this data in aggregate reveals patterns and warning signs, without attempting to explain any one death.
Participation Is Your Choice
This is a significant, deeply personal decision. Families choose if, when, and how to engage. There is no pressure, no expectation.
Trust Is Central
Devices are handled with care and dignity. Data is protected. Research is conducted ethically. Families can ask questions, set boundaries, or step back at any point.
Making a Difference Together
Join over 100 families who have chosen to turn their loss into lasting impact.
A Respectful, Supportive Process
We understand what you're going through. Our process is designed to be as supportive and transparent as possible.
Learn, Connect, Ask Questions
Begin by learning what participation involves. Our team answers questions and talks through concerns — without pressure or expectation. We can also offer grief resources or referrals. Support isn't dependent on saying yes. Schedule a conversation
Loaning Devices With Care
If you choose to participate, you loan your loved one's device — phone, tablet, or computer. We approach every device with dignity, recognizing its personal and emotional significance.
Research With Integrity
Data is used only for approved research. Personal details are removed and information is pooled across many families for aggregate study. When returned, devices are in the same condition with all data intact.
Staying Connected
Participating families are part of the Black Box Project community. We share research updates and real-world impact — so you can see how your loved one's legacy contributes to prevention and hope. Connection doesn't end when devices return.
Who Can Participate
The Black Box Project is open to all suicide-loss surviving families — not only military or veteran families. Families may be located anywhere, though devices must be U.S.-based to support our current research infrastructure.
Who We Are
The Black Box Project is an initiative of Stop Soldier Suicide, a nonprofit with over a decade of experience in suicide prevention and a deep commitment to treating families with care and respect. Our multidisciplinary team — researchers, clinicians, and technologists — works alongside leading academic institutions, healthcare systems, and technology partners to advance suicide prevention research.
